Road Project Management
In the world of construction and infrastructure, success is not measured solely by the quality of concrete or the straightness of a road, but also by the competence of the management behind the project. As a project manager, I believe our role goes beyond monitoring schedules or budgets; we are the link between vision and execution.
I began my project management career in the field, where I learned that good planning is just as important as the work on the ground. On every project, I focus on three key pillars: adherence to timelines, cost control, and quality assurance. Whether we're working on a highway or a multi-story building, coordinating between different teams and anticipating challenges before they arise is what distinguishes a successful project manager.
1. Study and Planning (Pre-construction Phase):
* Site study and alternative routes.
* Soil tests and geological analysis.
* Preparation of engineering designs and implementation plans.
* Determining the budget and timeline.
* Obtaining official permits and licenses.
2. Initial Site Preparation:
* Removal of vegetation and debris.
* Leveling and soil improvement.
* Defining road boundaries and markings.
3. Infrastructure (Earthworks):
* Excavation and backfilling according to levels.
* Compaction of soil in graded layers.
* Creation of a subgrade layer (the base layer of the soil).
4. Creation of Pavement Layers:
* Subbase: Often sand or gravel.
* Base course: Crushed stone or concrete, depending on the design.
* Asphalt layer: Often in two stages (binder course + wearing course).
5. Finishing Works:
* Construction of sidewalks and side barriers.
* Drainage works (culverts, sewers).
* Traffic signs and painting.
* Lighting (if necessary).
6. Inspection & Handover:
* Conducting quality tests (soil density, layer thickness, asphalt Marshall test).
* Reviewing the work with the relevant authorities.
