The difference between road projects and construction projects
As a project manager working on both road and residential construction projects, I have faced various challenges that require diverse skills and management approaches. In this blog, I share a realistic comparison between two types of projects I have managed: a main road construction project and a residential building construction project.
1. Project Nature:
* Road:
Implemented in open spaces and involves long horizontal works including excavation, backfilling, paving, and drainage.
* Architecture:
A vertical project that requires precision on every floor and integrated works including the structure, finishes, and electromechanical systems.
2. Technical Priorities:
* In roads:
The primary focus is on leveling, paving layers, drainage, and handling soil and climate.
* In architecture:
Architectural quality, coordination between construction, electrical, and plumbing, and the fine finishing of each residential unit.
3. Team and Contractor Management:
* Road:
Most of the work is done outdoors and requires large teams on-site simultaneously.
* Architecture:
Requires the management of multiple phases in a precise sequence: blacksmithing, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, etc., all of which must be tightly coordinated.
4. Dealing with Challenges:
* In roads:
The most common challenges are related to weather, soil quality, and drainage issues.
* In buildings:
The biggest challenges are in coordinating the various systems (mechanical, electrical, architectural) without conflict.
5. Monitoring the Schedule:
* A road project:
It is usually divided into segments that are implemented sequentially or in parallel.
* An architecture project:
It is divided into floors and phases (foundations, structure, finishing, etc.), which requires careful planning to avoid delays.
6. Delivery Mechanism:
* A road:
Requires pavement quality tests (such as the Marshall test) and evaluation of drainage and lighting performance.
* An architecture project:
Includes inspection of each apartment, internal systems, finish quality, and utility warranties.
🎯 Conclusion:
Every project has its own unique nature and challenges, but the common factor is the importance of advance planning, effective coordination, and rapid decision-making.
As a project manager, I consider the ability to adapt between both types of projects a testament to professional maturity and management flexibility.
